A Midsummer Night's Dream — Act 1, Scene 1: Athens. The palace of THESEUS.

At Theseus’s palace in Athens, Theseus and Hippolyta speak about their approaching wedding and he orders Philostrate to prepare public celebrations. Egeus then brings his complaint against his daughter Hermia, demanding that she marry Demetrius instead of Lysander. Theseus supports the father’s authority and tells Hermia she must obey or face death or a life as a nun. After Theseus leaves, Lysander and Hermia speak privately about the unfairness of love and the obstacles they face. Lysander proposes that they meet secretly in the wood outside Athens and flee together. Hermia agrees, Helena arrives, and they each reveal their unhappy feelings about Demetrius before Helena decides to inform him of Hermia’s plan.
