Antony and Cleopatra — Act 5, Scene 2: Alexandria. A room in the monument.

Cleopatra, with Charmian and Iras in the monument, rejects Caesar’s power and speaks of death as the only way to escape change. Proculeius arrives for Caesar, pretending courtesy while telling her to make her requests. Cleopatra tries to bargain as a queen, then panics when Proculeius and soldiers seize the monument entrance and keep her under guard. She threatens to starve and isolate herself rather than be shown in Rome. Dolabella then replaces Proculeius and speaks gently to her about Antony. Cleopatra remembers Antony with passionate praise, learns that Caesar plans to take her and her children to Rome, and is crushed at the thought of public humiliation.
