King Lear — Act 3, Scene 6: A chamber in a farmhouse adjoining the castle.

Gloucester brings Lear, Kent, the Fool, and Edgar into shelter in a farmhouse chamber and leaves after saying he will return quickly. Inside, Lear’s madness deepens as he mistakes Edgar and the Fool for judges and tries to stage a trial against Goneril and Regan, accusing them of cruelty. Edgar keeps up his disguise as Poor Tom, while the Fool and Kent try to steady Lear and urge him to rest. Lear grows exhausted and confused, and Kent settles him down. Gloucester then returns and warns that a death plot has been overheard against Lear, so he arranges a litter and urges Kent to take the king at once toward Dover.
