King Lear — Act 4, Scene 1: The heath.

Edgar, now alone on the heath as Poor Tom, reflects that being openly miserable is easier than being falsely honored. He is stunned when Gloucester enters, blind and led by an old tenant, and realizes his father has been mutilated. Gloucester speaks bitterly about his blindness and his suffering, while the old man urges him to take care. Edgar, still hiding his identity, guides the old man away to fetch clothing for Gloucester. When Gloucester asks Poor Tom if he knows the road to Dover, Edgar answers yes and agrees to lead him there. Gloucester gives Poor Tom a purse and speaks grimly about human greed and suffering before they leave together.
