Measure for Measure — Act 1, Scene 1: An apartment in the DUKE'S palace.

In the Duke’s palace, Duke Vincentio gives Angelo and Escalus authority to govern Vienna in his absence. He praises Angelo’s judgment and tells him to act with the full power of the Duke’s office, while placing Escalus second in command. Angelo is uneasy at being given such a high charge and asks for a greater test before accepting it, but the Duke insists and leaves the commission with him. The Duke then departs quietly, saying he prefers not to be publicly seen off. After he goes, Escalus tells Angelo he wants a private talk to understand the duties and limits of his new position, and Angelo agrees.
