Measure for Measure — Act 3, Scene 1: A room in the prison.

In the prison, the disguised Duke speaks privately with Claudio and the Provost, telling Claudio to accept death calmly, since life is uncertain and death inevitable. Isabella arrives to tell Claudio that Angelo still demands his execution unless she yields to him, and Claudio, frightened, pleads with her to save him. Isabella angrily condemns his weakness. The Duke then reveals that he has overheard her story and assures Claudio that his death must still stand for now. After sending Claudio away, he speaks alone with Isabella, praises her virtue, and proposes a plan: she should agree to Angelo’s demand while Mariana, Angelo’s former promised wife, takes her place. Isabella accepts the scheme.
