Measure for Measure — Act 4, Scene 4: A room in ANGELO's house.

Angelo and Escalus discuss the Duke’s strange letters and the plan for his return to Vienna. Angelo thinks the Duke may be acting in a confused or mad way, but Escalus explains that the public meeting and proclamation are meant to clear up complaints before the Duke arrives. Angelo agrees to have the announcement made early the next morning and tells Escalus to notify the important men who must attend. After Escalus leaves, Angelo is left alone and bitterly reflects on how his demand on Isabella has disturbed him. He fears the shame of a violated maiden and worries that Claudio’s death, though lawful, was also meant to avoid future revenge.
