Measure for Measure — Act 4, Scene 6: Street near the city gate.

Isabella and Mariana wait near the city gate, preparing for the public accusation they have been instructed to make. Isabella is uneasy about speaking indirectly, since she does not want to accuse Angelo herself, but Mariana urges her to follow the Friar’s plan. Isabella explains that she has been told to let events unfold as arranged, even if Angelo turns against her in public. Friar Peter arrives and leads them to a better position where they can confront the Duke as he passes. He says the trumpets have sounded, the citizens have taken their places at the gate, and the Duke is almost there, so he hurries Isabella and Mariana away.
