Measure for Measure — Act 5, Scene 1: The city gate.

At the city gate, the Duke returns publicly with Angelo, Escalus, Lucio, and others, while Isabella and the veiled Mariana wait with Friar Peter. Isabella steps forward and accuses Angelo of demanding her body in exchange for Claudio’s life, but the Duke treats her as mad and orders her removed. Friar Peter then brings Mariana forward, and she reveals that Angelo had once been contracted to her and later used Isabella in her place. Angelo tries to deny wrongdoing, but the Duke turns on him, reveals himself, and orders Angelo to marry Mariana immediately. He then pardons Isabella, unmasks Claudio as still alive, condemns Angelo, and punishes Lucio for slandering the Duke.
