Much Ado About Nothing — Act 4, Scene 2: A prison.

Dogberry, Verges, and the Sexton begin the formal examination of Borachio and Conrade, with the Watch acting as accusers. Dogberry blunders through the process, tries to record everything himself, and repeatedly misunderstands who is guilty and how the hearing should proceed. The Watch reports Borachio’s confession that Don John paid him to falsely accuse Hero and that Claudio meant to disgrace her publicly instead of marrying her. The Sexton sees that the men have enough evidence to be bound and taken to Leonato. Conrade mocks Dogberry as they are arrested, and Dogberry responds with wounded pride, insisting on his own importance while still helping have the prisoners led away.
