At Pentapolis, Simonides and Thaisa oversee the tournament held for Thaisa’s birthday. Simonides asks whether the knights are ready, and Thaisa explains the devices and mottos carried by each competitor as they pass before the court. She identifies a knight from Sparta, one from Macedon, one from Antioch, and others with their emblems. The sixth and last knight is Pericles, who appears in worn, rusty armor and presents a withered branch with the motto that he lives in hope. The court mocks his shabby appearance, but Simonides warns against judging by outward show and leads everyone to withdraw to the gallery as the knights prepare for the contest.
