Pericles, Prince of Tyre — Act 3, Scene 1: On board a vessel at sea.

Pericles appears alone on the storm-tossed ship and pleads with the sea and gods to calm the violent weather, especially for the sake of Thaisa, who is in labor below. Lychorida brings him the newborn daughter and tells him that Thaisa is dead. Pericles grieves, praises the child, and asks the sailors to spare the queen’s body, but they insist that the dead must be thrown overboard to appease the storm. He mournfully agrees and prepares funeral honors as best he can. Then he learns they are near Tarsus and decides to alter course there, intending to leave the baby with Cleon for safe care.
