Pericles, Prince of Tyre — Act 4, Scene 1: Tarsus. An open place near the sea-shore.

Dionyza has already decided to have Marina killed and brings Leonine to the shore to carry out the deed. She urges him to ignore pity and remember his oath, and Leonine agrees, though he admits Marina is beautiful. Marina enters with flowers for her supposed mistress’s grave and mourns the death of her mother, recalling the stormy birth that made her life feel unsettled. Dionyza pretends concern, then sends Marina to walk alone with Leonine. When Leonine tells Marina he must kill her, she pleads innocence and tries to move his compassion, but he seizes her just as pirates arrive, drive him off, and carry Marina away by force.
