Romeo and Juliet — Act 4, Scene 1: Friar Laurence's cell.

In Friar Laurence’s cell, Paris tells the friar that Capulet has arranged for him to marry Juliet on Thursday and says he is ready to obey. When Juliet arrives, Paris speaks to her as if they are already promised, but Juliet answers carefully and keeps her distance. Paris leaves, and Juliet privately tells Friar Laurence that she is desperate and would rather die than marry Paris. The friar offers a dangerous plan: Juliet should agree to the wedding, then drink a potion from a vial that will make her appear dead for about forty-two hours. He says Romeo will be informed by letter and come for her after she wakes.
