Brutus and his remaining followers hide on a rock after the battle has turned against them. Clitus, Dardanius, and Volumnius refuse Brutus’s whispered request that one of them help him die, and they beg him to flee instead. Brutus says Caesar’s ghost has appeared to him and decides his own time has come. He asks Volumnius, an old school friend, to hold his sword while he runs onto it, but Volumnius will not do it. Brutus then sends the others away and asks Strato to hold the sword; Strato agrees, and Brutus kills himself. Octavius, Antony, and the others arrive, hear how he died, and honor Brutus as the noblest Roman before ordering his body treated with respect.
