The Life and Death of King John — Act 5, Scene 2: LEWIS's camp at St. Edmundsbury.

At Lewis’s camp, Salisbury, Pembroke, Bigot, and Melun formally join the Dauphin’s cause, though Salisbury mourns that English nobles are fighting their own country. Cardinal Pandulph then arrives and tells Lewis that King John has made peace with Rome, so Lewis should withdraw. Lewis refuses, arguing that Pandulph first pushed him into this war and that he will not give up his claim to England now that he has nearly won it. A trumpet announces the Bastard, who comes from John to hear the French position. He reports that John is ready for battle and sharply taunts Lewis and the rebel lords. Lewis and the Bastard end by ordering drums to sound for war.
