The Life and Death of King John — Act 5, Scene 6: An open place in the neighbourhood of Swinstead Abbey.

In the dark near Swinstead Abbey, Hubert and the Bastard meet cautiously and quickly recognize each other. Hubert says he has come to find the Bastard and brings terrible news: King John has been poisoned by a monk and is left almost speechless, though he may still recover. He also says the rebel lords have returned with Prince Henry and that John has pardoned them, and they are now with the king. The Bastard is shaken and reports that many of his own troops have been lost in the Lincoln Washes by the tide. He hurries Hubert to lead him to John at once.
