At the Tower, Buckingham, Hastings, Derby, the Bishop of Ely, Ratcliff, and others meet to settle the coronation of the young king. They discuss the date, but Buckingham first tries to learn Gloucester’s feelings about it. Gloucester arrives, speaks politely, and sends Ely away for strawberries so he can talk privately with Buckingham. He warns Buckingham that Hastings is fiercely opposed to the plan to crown the prince. After the others return, Gloucester suddenly accuses Hastings of using witchcraft against him and then immediately orders his arrest and execution. The others leave in shock. Hastings, realizing too late what has happened, laments his own trust and is led away to be beheaded.
