The Life of King Henry the Eighth — Act 2, Scene 1: Westminster. A street.

Two gentlemen meet outside the hall and discuss Buckingham’s trial. The first gentleman has just seen it and says Buckingham was found guilty of high treason after defending himself, but the evidence of the surveyor, Sir Gilbert Peck, John Car, and Hopkins persuaded the peers. He says Buckingham showed great patience when his sentence was read. The men then blame Cardinal Wolsey, whom the commons hate, for arranging the duke’s downfall. Buckingham appears under guard with the axe before him and speaks to the crowd, forgiving his enemies, praising the king, and accepting death. After he is led away, the gentlemen report a rumor that Henry and Katherine are separating, with Cardinal Campeius said to be involved.
