The Life of King Henry the Eighth — Act 5, Scene 2: Before the council-chamber. Pursuivants, Pages, & c.

Cranmer arrives expecting to be admitted to the council, but the Keeper stops him and says he must wait until he is called. Doctor Butts, the king’s physician, sees the insult being done to Cranmer and immediately decides to tell the king. Left outside, Cranmer realizes the delay is deliberate and meant to disgrace him, but he resolves to endure it patiently. Henry and Butts then appear at a window above and watch the scene. Butts points out that the Archbishop of Canterbury is being made to stand among pursuivants, pages, and footboys. Henry is shocked and angry at the lack of respect shown to a man so close to him.
