The Life of King Henry the Fifth — Act 4, Scene 0: PROLOGUE

The Chorus sets the scene on the night before battle, when both armies are awake in their camps and the sounds of watchfires, armorers, horses, and distant clocks fill the darkness. He contrasts the French, who feel secure and pass the time easily, with the English, who sit quietly and fear the coming fight. The Chorus then singles out King Henry, who moves from tent to tent visiting his soldiers, greeting them as brothers and countrymen, and hiding his own exhaustion and anxiety. His calm face gives courage to the fearful men around him. The Chorus closes by asking the audience to imagine the battle itself, even though the stage cannot show its full greatness.
