The Merchant of Venice — Act 1, Scene 1: Venice. A street.

In Venice, Antonio appears with Salarino and Salanio, but he cannot explain why he feels sad. They suggest his mood comes from worries about his ships or from love, while Antonio denies both. Bassanio, Lorenzo, and Gratiano arrive, and the first two soon leave, while Gratiano teases Antonio for being too serious and lectures him about the value of cheerfulness. After they go, Bassanio speaks privately with Antonio and asks for help winning Portia, a wealthy and virtuous woman in Belmont. Antonio says he has no ready money because his wealth is tied up at sea, but he offers to use his credit in Venice so Bassanio can pursue her.
