The Merchant of Venice — Act 5, Scene 1: Belmont. Avenue to PORTIA'S house.

In Belmont, Lorenzo and Jessica sit together in the moonlight and trade references to famous lovers and tragedies from classical stories. Their talk turns to news that Portia is on her way home, and Stephano arrives to say she will come before morning, with only a hermit and her maid. Launcelot also rushes in with word that Bassanio and the others are close behind. Lorenzo then has musicians play and delivers a long reflection on the power of music. Portia and Nerissa arrive, welcome the music, and soon Bassanio, Antonio, and Gratiano enter. The scene closes with Portia greeting them home and the ring quarrel beginning between the couples.
