The Tempest — Act 3, Scene 1: Before PROSPERO'S Cell.

Ferdinand enters carrying logs and reflects that hard labor feels lighter when love gives it meaning. Miranda arrives and, with Prospero watching unseen at a distance, begs Ferdinand to rest and even offers to carry the wood herself, but he refuses to let her do such work. They speak kindly and quickly fall in love, each praising the other’s goodness. Ferdinand asks her name, declares his devotion, and Miranda admits she wants no other companion. She then boldly asks whether he will marry her, and he agrees, taking her hand. After they part, Prospero is pleased to see their affection and returns to his book to continue his work.
