The Tempest — Act 5, Scene 1: Before PROSPERO'S cell.

Prospero and Ariel appear in Prospero’s magical robes, and Prospero sees that his plan is nearly complete. Ariel reports that Alonso, Sebastian, Antonio, and their followers are still trapped and sorrowful near the cell, which softens Prospero’s anger. He decides that mercy is better than revenge and orders Ariel to bring the men before him and release them from the spell. Prospero then recalls the power of his magic and resolves to give it up, breaking his staff and burying his book. After Ariel brings the party, Prospero reveals himself to Alonso as the Duke of Milan, forgives Alonso and Antonio, and prepares to welcome everyone into his cell.
