Back in Rome after the war, Coriolanus learns that Tullus Aufidius has retreated to Antium and still hates him. When Sicinius and Brutus arrive, they stop Coriolanus from going on and say the people are angry about his behavior, especially his insults during the corn crisis. Coriolanus turns on the tribunes, attacks the common people, and rages against the custom that lets them help choose a consul. The argument turns into open disorder when the tribunes order him seized and citizens rush in. After the crowd is driven off, Menenius and the senators calm matters, and the tribunes agree to meet Coriolanus later at the market-place, where Menenius says he will bring him.
