The Tragedy of Coriolanus — Act 5, Scene 1: Rome. A public place.

Menenius, Cominius, Sicinius, and Brutus gather to discuss Coriolanus, now hostile to Rome. Menenius says he will not go to him at first, but after the tribunes urge him, he agrees to try using his friendship and influence. Cominius explains that Coriolanus would not even acknowledge him properly, seemed hardened against all reminders of old ties, and would only answer in writing after refusing his spoken plea. He warns that Coriolanus’s anger makes hope nearly useless unless Volumnia and Virgilia can persuade him to show mercy to Rome. The others decide to leave and encourage the women to make the appeal.
