On a cold midnight watch at Elsinore, Francisco is relieved by Bernardo, then Bernardo is joined by Horatio and Marcellus. Marcellus and Bernardo tell Horatio they have twice seen a ghost that looks like the dead King Hamlet, but Horatio doubts them. When the spirit appears again, Horatio speaks to it, asking what it is and why it has come, but the ghost gives no answer and leaves. Horatio, shaken, recognizes the figure as King Hamlet in his old armor and concludes that the sight may signal trouble for Denmark. The men discuss Denmark’s military preparations and young Fortinbras’s threat, then see the ghost a second time before a cock crows and it vanishes. Horatio and Marcellus decide to tell Prince Hamlet about it.
