The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark — Act 2, Scene 1: A room in POLONIUS' house.

Polonius sends Reynaldo to Paris with money and letters for Laertes, but first instructs him to ask indirect questions about Laertes’s conduct by spreading mild rumors and listening for how other people respond. He explains this as a way to discover the truth without asking directly. After Reynaldo leaves, Ophelia rushes in and tells Polonius that Hamlet has appeared in her chamber in a disordered state, pale and shaken, staring at her and sighing without speaking. Polonius decides Hamlet is mad for love of Ophelia, regrets not understanding him sooner, and tells Ophelia to come with him to inform the king.
