The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark — Act 5, Scene 2: A hall in the castle.

Hamlet tells Horatio how he escaped Claudius’s plot against him on the voyage to England. He says he stole the sealed commission from Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, opened it, and found Claudius had ordered England to execute the bearers at once. Hamlet rewrote the letter, using his father’s signet to forge the seal, so that the English king would kill Rosencrantz and Guildenstern instead. He then explains that their deaths do not trouble his conscience. Hamlet also reflects on his quarrel with Laertes and agrees he was wrong to speak so harshly to him. Their conversation is interrupted by Osric, who brings Claudius’s request that Hamlet fence with Laertes.
