The Tragedy of Macbeth — Act 1, Scene 3: A heath near Forres.

On a heath near Forres, the three witches gather after carrying out cruel tricks at sea and on land. When they hear a drum, they know Macbeth is approaching and cast their spell. Macbeth and Banquo arrive, and the witches greet Macbeth as Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and future king. They tell Banquo that he will be less than Macbeth in one way, greater in another, and the father of kings. Macbeth is stunned and demands more, but the witches vanish. Ross and Angus then arrive and confirm that Macbeth has indeed been named Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth is shaken by the prophecy, while Banquo warns him that dark powers may tell truths to cause harm.
