The Tragedy of Macbeth — Act 1, Scene 4: Forres. The palace.

At Forres, Duncan asks whether the former Thane of Cawdor has been executed, and Malcolm reports that the condemned man confessed his treason, asked pardon, and died with unexpected dignity. Duncan reflects that a person’s face can hide his true thoughts. Macbeth, Banquo, Ross, and Angus arrive, and Duncan thanks Macbeth warmly for his service in battle. Macbeth and Banquo respond humbly, and Duncan praises Banquo too. Duncan then names Malcolm the Prince of Cumberland and says he will travel to Inverness as Macbeth’s guest. Macbeth, aside, is troubled that Malcolm now stands in his path and speaks of his hidden desire for the crown.
