The Tragedy of Macbeth — Act 3, Scene 4: The same. Hall in the palace.

At Macbeth’s banquet, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth welcome Ross, Lennox, and the other lords while pretending to be gracious hosts. Macbeth speaks privately with the first murderer and learns that Banquo has been killed, though Fleance escaped. He is disturbed that the surviving boy remains a threat. When Macbeth returns to the table, Banquo’s ghost appears in his seat, visible only to Macbeth, and Macbeth panics in front of the guests. Lady Macbeth tries to calm everyone and explain his behavior as a temporary fit, then sends the nobles away. After they leave, Macbeth reflects on the violence around him and speaks of seeking more knowledge from the witches.
