The Tragedy of Macbeth — Act 5, Scene 5: Dunsinane. Within the castle.

At Dunsinane, Macbeth and Seyton prepare the castle for siege and try to sound confident, though a cry of women interrupts him. Seyton returns with the news that Lady Macbeth is dead, and Macbeth responds with numb, bitter reflection on how empty life has become. Before he can absorb the news, a messenger arrives from the hill and reports that Birnam Wood seems to be moving toward the castle. Macbeth at first calls him a liar, then realizes the report matches the witches’ promise and loses confidence in their deceitful prophecy. He orders the alarm sounded and prepares to fight to the end.
