Timon of Athens — Act 1, Scene 2: A banqueting-room in Timon's house.

At Timon’s banquet, Ventidius thanks him for helping free his father and tries to repay the loan, but Timon refuses, saying true generosity is given freely. Timon dismisses ceremony, seats his guests, and endures Apemantus’s scornful remarks about the vanity and danger of feasting and friendship. Alcibiades jokes with Timon, while Timon praises his friends and grows emotional over their supposed loyalty. Cupid then announces ladies who enter masked as Amazons and dance with the lords. After the dance, Timon sends the ladies away, gives jewels and gifts to the guests, and accepts presents from Lucius and Lucullus. Flavius sees Timon spending far beyond his means.
