Timon of Athens — Act 3, Scene 1: A room in Lucullus' house.

Flaminius comes to Lucullus’s house with Timon’s request for a loan of fifty talents. Lucullus greets him warmly at first and talks as if Timon is a generous friend, but he quickly reveals his true attitude. He excuses himself by saying this is no time to lend money without security and praises Flaminius as if that might soften the refusal. Then he offers Flaminius a small bribe to keep quiet about the visit. Flaminius is shocked, throws the money back, and condemns Lucullus’s greed and false friendship before leaving in disgust. Lucullus dismisses him as foolish.
