Timon of Athens — Act 3, Scene 2: A public place.

Lucilius is walking with three strangers when they talk about Timon’s falling estate and the recent refusal of a loan from Lucullus. Lucilius is shocked by the denial and admits that, though Timon has given him gifts in the past, he would not have refused such help. Servilius then arrives from Timon, asking for a loan in Timon’s need. Lucilius pretends friendship and concern, but excuses himself by saying he cannot spare the money and sends only polite words back. After Servilius leaves, he admits Timon’s fortune is truly failing. The strangers condemn Lucius’s hypocrisy and pity Timon’s treatment.
