Timon of Athens — Act 3, Scene 3: A room in Sempronius' house.

Sempronius receives Timon’s servant and angrily complains that Timon has come to him last, after Lucius, Lucullus, and Ventidius have all refused help. He argues that Timon should have approached him first, since he believes he was among the earliest to receive gifts from Timon, and he resents being treated as a final option. Instead of helping, he orders the servant to return with a cold refusal, saying that anyone who lowers his honor will not get his money. After Sempronius leaves, the servant denounces his hypocrisy and notes bitterly that Timon’s remaining hope has failed, since even his supposed friends have abandoned him.
