Timon of Athens — Act 4, Scene 3: Woods and cave, near the seashore.

Near Timon’s cave by the seashore, Timon comes out and finds Alcibiades with Phrynia and Timandra. He rejects Alcibiades’s concern, curses mankind, and urges him to continue his war against Athens, but only in a way that brings ruin on everyone. He also attacks the two women as prostitutes and gives them gold while abusing them. After Alcibiades leaves, Timon digs in the ground, prays for nature to deny human beings, and eats a root. Apemantus arrives and quarrels with him over misery, wealth, and human nature. Timon drives him off, then gives bandits gold and tells them to steal and plunder. Flavius appears, and Timon briefly softens, recognizes his loyalty, and sends him away rich.
