Timon of Athens — Act 5, Scene 4: Before the walls of Athens.

Alcibiades arrives with his army before Athens and orders a threatening display, while the senators come onto the walls to parley. Alcibiades accuses the city of long corruption and demands justice for the wrongs he and Timon suffered. The senators answer by urging mercy, arguing that Athens should not be punished for the crimes of a few and asking him to spare the innocent. After negotiation, Alcibiades agrees to enter the city peacefully and promises that his men will submit offenders to public law. A soldier then reports that Timon is dead and shows an inscription from his grave. Alcibiades reads the epitaph, mourns Timon, and leads his forces into Athens.
