Titus Andronicus — Act 1, Scene 1: Rome. Before the Capitol.

At Rome’s Capitol, Saturninus and Bassianus both claim the imperial throne and withdraw their followers after Marcus Andronicus announces that the people have chosen Titus Andronicus, the victorious general, as emperor. Titus arrives with the bodies of his sons and Goth prisoners, honors his dead children, and offers Alarbus, Tamora’s eldest son, as a sacrifice for Roman funeral rites, despite Tamora’s pleas. Titus then accepts the crown for Saturninus instead of himself and promises Lavinia to him, but Bassianus claims Lavinia as his own betrothed and takes her away. In the confusion, Titus kills his son Mutius, then later learns Saturninus has chosen Tamora for his bride and reconciles publicly with the court.
