Troilus and Cressida — Act 1, Scene 0: PROLOGUE

The Prologue sets the scene in Troy, where the Greeks have come from Athens with a fleet of warships to attack the city because Helen, Menelaus’s wife, is living in Troy with Paris. It explains that the Greek army has landed at Tenedos and then set up camp on the plains near Troy, while the Trojans remain shut up behind the city’s fortified gates. The speaker also says the play will begin in the middle of the larger conflict rather than at the start, and asks the audience to judge it as they wish, since war brings uncertainty.
