Troilus and Cressida — Act 2, Scene 1: A part of the Grecian camp.

In the Greek camp, Ajax tries to get Thersites to explain the proclamation, but Thersites answers with insults instead, mocking Ajax’s stupidity, envy of Achilles, and lack of true valor. Ajax grows angry and beats him repeatedly. Achilles and Patroclus arrive and ask what is happening. Thersites continues provoking everyone, making cutting remarks about Ajax, Achilles, and the other Greek leaders, while Ajax insists on hearing the proclamation. Achilles finally explains that Hector has publicly challenged a Greek knight to answer him in combat the next morning. He says the choice is being left to chance. Thersites, tired of the quarrel, leaves the tent.
