Two Gentlemen of Verona — Act 4, Scene 2: Milan. Outside the DUKE's palace, under SILVIA's chamber.

Proteus, waiting outside Silvia’s chamber with Thurio and musicians, admits to himself that he has already betrayed Valentine and now must deceive Thurio as well in order to pursue Silvia. Thurio arrives with the musicians, and just then the disguised Julia appears at a distance with the Host, asking to hear Proteus and the evening music. The song in Silvia’s praise only deepens Julia’s misery. Silvia appears above and sharply rejects Proteus’s suit, calling him false and reminding him of Valentine and Julia. Proteus then asks for Silvia’s portrait instead, and she agrees to send it. After he leaves, Julia remains in anguish over his faithlessness.
