The Winter's Tale — Act 2, Scene 2: A prison.

Paulina comes to the prison with a gentleman and attendants and asks to see Queen Hermione. The gaoler, who respects her, says he has orders to keep visitors out, but he allows her to speak with Emilia, one of the queen’s women, after the others withdraw. Emilia reports that Hermione has given birth to a daughter and remains grief-stricken but relieved by the child, which she says is as innocent as the queen herself. Paulina immediately decides to confront King Leontes and speak for Hermione. She asks whether Hermione may send the baby to her, and the gaoler worries about breaking rules, but Paulina assures him she will take responsibility.
