All's Well That Ends Well — Act 1, Scene 1: Rousillon. The COUNT's palace.

In Rousillon, the Countess, Bertram, Helena, and Lafeu gather in mourning after the Count’s death. Bertram must leave for the king’s court, and Lafeu speaks of the king’s illness, explaining that the doctors have failed him. The Countess praises Helena’s late father, Gerard de Narbon, and reveals her deep respect for Helena’s character, then gives Bertram earnest advice about honor, self-control, and friendship before saying farewell. After Bertram and Lafeu leave, Helena admits in solitude that she loves Bertram and feels crushed by his departure. Parolles enters, and Helena jokes with him about virginity and soldiers, but her thoughts remain fixed on Bertram and the king’s disease.
