In Florence outside the city walls, the Widow, Diana, Mariana, and other citizens wait to see the French troops and talk about Bertram’s military reputation. Mariana warns Diana to guard her honor and distrust the promises and tricks of soldiers, especially Parolles, whom she knows as a corrupt agent for Bertram. Helena then arrives disguised as a pilgrim on her way to Saint Jaques, and the Widow offers her lodging. Helena asks about Bertram, learns that he is admired as a French lord, and hears that he is trying to woo Diana improperly. When Bertram, Parolles, and the army march past, the women identify them, and Helena agrees to stay with the Widow, inviting her and Diana to supper.
