Antony and Cleopatra — Act 1, Scene 5: Alexandria. CLEOPATRA's palace.

Cleopatra enters with Charmian, Iras, and Mardian and immediately shows her restlessness over Antony’s absence, asking for something to make her sleep through the time apart. Charmian tries to calm her, but Cleopatra turns from joking to longing, imagining Antony on the road and praising his greatness in extravagant terms. She teases Mardian about his eunuch status, then asks whether he has real feelings, and he answers that he does, though he cannot act on them. When Alexas arrives from Antony, Cleopatra eagerly questions him and learns that Antony sent affectionate greetings and many messages. Cleopatra is pleased, mocks Charmian for comparing Antony to Caesar, and orders ink and paper so she can send Antony daily letters.
