Antony and Cleopatra — Act 2, Scene 1: Messina. POMPEY's house.

Pompey meets with Menas and hears confidence that the gods may favor just men, but he warns that delay can ruin a cause. Pompey believes his own support is growing: the people love him, the sea is under his control, and his prospects are rising. He says Antony remains in Egypt, while Caesar gains money but loses loyalty, and Lepidus flatters both sides. Menas brings uncertain news that Caesar and Lepidus are in the field, then Varrius confirms that Antony is expected back in Rome soon. Pompey hopes Antony’s weakness in Egypt will keep him distracted and that the Roman leaders will turn on one another.
