Antony and Cleopatra — Act 2, Scene 2: Rome. The house of LEPIDUS.

In Lepidus’s house in Rome, Enobarbus and Lepidus wait for Antony and Caesar and argue briefly over whether Antony should answer Caesar calmly or boldly. When Antony and Caesar arrive with their followers, Lepidus tries to soften the meeting and keep the peace, but Antony and Caesar quickly quarrel over old grievances, including Fulvia’s war, Antony’s time in Egypt, and broken promises. Agrippa then suggests that Antony marry Caesar’s sister Octavia to unite them, and Caesar agrees. The talk turns to Pompey’s power, and Antony, Caesar, and Lepidus go off together. Left behind, Enobarbus entertains Mecaenas and Agrippa with a vivid description of Cleopatra’s splendor.
